Faliraki
The nearest full-scale resort to Rhodes Town and the easiest sand to reach without a car. Its reputation is built on one strip of it; the reason to stay on the bus a little longer is the run of small rocky coves immediately to the south.
The beach
A long, straight run of sand that shelves gently, organised for most of its length with loungers, umbrellas and water sports, and backed by a solid wall of tavernas and bars. It is the most convenient proper beach on the island for anyone based in Rhodes Town, and it is busy for exactly that reason. The far ends are quieter than the middle.
The coves to the south
Past the resort the coast breaks up into small rocky inlets — Ladiko first, then Anthony Quinn Bay, named after the actor who bought the land around it. Clear, deep water, very little sand, and good snorkelling off the rocks. They sit off the main road, so the last stretch to each is on foot: downhill on the way there and uphill on the way back, which is the part people forget when they are deciding what time to leave.
What it costs
Walking onto the sand costs nothing. A lounger and umbrella do, and so does anything with an engine attached to it. Rates are set beach by beach and change with the season, so we do not quote them — pay at the beach rather than planning around a figure you read somewhere.
The resort itself
There are two Falirakis. One is the late-night strip the place is known for, which is concentrated in a small and clearly signposted part of it. The other is an ordinary Greek resort town with supermarkets, bakeries, pharmacies and family tavernas, and it is the one you spend the day in. Knowing which end you are staying at matters more than the reputation does.
Where it sits on the network
Faliraki is on the main east-coast corridor, so services heading further south towards Lindos and services heading back into town both pass through. That is what makes it a workable base without a car — you are not tied to a single daily departure the way you are further down the coast. The catch is that both operators publish services along this stretch and they do not leave from the same place.
Getting here
By bus from Rhodes Town
This is the corridor where knowing your operator matters. KTEL Rodou runs the east-coast intercity service and a municipal Δ.Ε.Σ. ΡΟΔΑ line also covers this stretch by way of Kallithea Avenue; they publish separately, sell separately and leave from separate stands in Rhodes Town. About Faliraki
Is Faliraki only about the nightlife?
No, though that is what it is known for. The late-night strip occupies a small, well-defined part of the resort and the rest of it is an ordinary working seaside town. Families stay at the quieter ends and mostly never see the other part of it.
Can I walk to Anthony Quinn Bay from Faliraki?
Yes, and plenty of people do, but treat it as a walk rather than a stroll. The bay is south of the resort, off the main road, and the last part of the approach drops down to the water — which means it climbs on the way back, in the afternoon, when you are tired and salty. Go early if you want it quiet.
Is there anything to do at Faliraki when it rains or blows?
Not a great deal on the beach itself, which is open to the wind that gets up on this coast in the afternoon. The sheltered coves to the south are the usual answer on a choppy day, and Rhodes Town — the Old Town in particular — is close enough on the same corridor to be a reasonable change of plan.
